1st Reading:  Jeremiah 31:31-34
2nd Reading:  Hebrews 5:5-10
Gospel:  John 12:20-33

O God, with steadfast love you draw us to yourself, and in mercy you receive our prayers.  Strengthen us to bring forth the fruits of the Spirit, that through life and death we may live in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

  • Jesus taught Nicodemus (in John 3) that just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
  • In John 12 Jesus said, “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.
  • In Acts 1, it says, “When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.”

Perhaps in lifting Jesus up in our lives and by the work of the Holy Spirit, we too shall be lifted up with him. May God prepare us in this way to share in this glorious activity of love, sacrifice and eternal life. May it be so, AMEN!
