… from Worship at Good Sam on Sept 21, 2014
This was the beginning of our four week Fall Focus called “Faith and Reconciliation in the life of Jacob”

“Abram believed the Lord, and he (God) credited it to him as righteousness.” (Gen. 15:6)

I have often wished to have the faith of Abraham. I have wondered what it would be like if the Scriptures were filled with stories of those who managed to come to faith and eventually find themselves with faith like Abraham’s. Perhaps then the Scripture would really be a helpful tool for coming to faith and for finding instruction in living lives of faith. Oh, yes…for many of us this is exactly what the Scriptures are! Perhaps then, this verse from Genesis 15 is one early indication of what the purpose of Scripture is all about.

As Jacob’s life begins, conflict and family dysfunction seem to obscure any sense of God’s working. Jacob doesn’t begin life with any particular sense of faith. He experiences all of the family dynamics that challenge many of our personal families, not to mention our church families. And yet, somehow amid the human drama the presence and promises of God begin to come shining through.  (Gen 25 and 27)
