An experiential learning trip for those in the Metro DC Synod of the ELCA

What will we do?: We will visit key sites in and around Jerusalem (including Bethlehem and Nazareth) and seek to build relationships with local Lutherans and other Christians engaged in the pursuit of peace in the Holy Land.

Where will we stay?: The Lutheran World Federation guest house on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

Trip Leaders: Pr. Ray Ranker is the Lutheran Campus Pastor at the University of Maryland. Karin Brown is the Coordinator of the Peace Not Walls campaign of the ELCA (focused on peace and justice in Israel and Palestine). She has lived in the Holy Land at different times in her life. This husband and wife team recently led a trip for Metro DC young adults in June, 2013.

Cost: $1250 (includes lodging, all but two meals, transportation, tour guide fees, entrance fees, tips)

*Airfare to Tel Aviv not included in the price.  As of 12/8, cheapest tickets are approx.: $1350

Deadline:

  • By January 30: Email or call Pr. Ray (contact information below) indicating your interest and sharing your name, congregation, and a brief paragraph about why you are interested in the trip.
  • By February 1: $350 deposit due
  • By May 15: Full balance due

Informational sessions (come and learn about the trip):

  • Monday December 16, 7:30 pm (Hope Lutheran Church College Park, MD)
  • Saturday December 21, 11:30 am (Northwest Washington DC, exact location TBA- to follow 10 a.m. Bethlehem prayer service at the National Cathedral)

Expectations: Participants will be expected to participate in three group meetings before the trip to prepare, and two meetings after the trip to reflect. All participants should be prepared to walk three miles a day (no cars are allowed in the Old City of Jerusalem). Participants will be expected to share about their experience in their home congregations when they return.
